Greetings, Orchid Lovers
========================
Captain Stew of the Mouse Patrol here, with my regular report on the happenings at Stewart Orchids. Have I ever been busy! The Boss has been finishing up his Major Clean-up of the premises ........ and boyohboy, are we ever clean! Only trouble is, hunting is getting pretty slim for old Stew, now that things are so clean and polished. All the varmints are departing for some more comfortably neglected and messy place, where they can set up housekeeping. I am having to depend on the kindness of strangers and friends for most of my treats. [Hint --- hint!] But it does give me more time for my writing, which is fun, too.
Back From Their Travels
=======================
The Boss and Mrs. Boss are back from their adventures in Houston, Texas, and Des Moines, Iowa. Boss says they loved their stopover in Houston for the Houston Summer Workshop, visiting with old friends and making new ones. He hated to leave before the end, but had to get over to Des Moines to their workshop, where he was a featured speaker. He told me that the whole Workshop program was very well-arranged by the event coordinators.
He also got a chance to schmooze with Carson Whitlow, who runs the famous Orchid Mall on-line. Carson, in an earlier era at Stewart Orchids, worked with our hybridizers on our famous blue cattleya breeding program. Boss says it wouldn't be surprising if we see more of that work being done down the road apiece.
Boss Needs New Shoes
====================
After his busy summer, the Boss disappeared again a few weeks ago. The Boss tells me he went off to Canada for a 10-day, eight-talk road trip through the Provinces. A Canadian man named Landis Stanlake ramrodded the whole thing and Boss says did an excellent job. After the Canadian jaunt, the Boss dropped in at Teas Nurseries in Houston, his old home-base, doing some public seminars on Orchids for Your Home and Garden.
Boss was also a featured speaker at the South Florida Orchid Society's Speakers Day, in Miami. Great talks! Great People! And the premier party at Bob Fuchs wasn't bad either! Boss says now there's a cat who knows how to entertain.
Now, with all that traveling done, Boss really needs new shoes, as the old saying goes.
We're In the Movies!
====================
Well ...... we're not exactly doing a solo turn on the silver screen. But, along with several other participating nurseries, we are part of a new orchid video which should be released soon. Entitled Anyone Can Grow Orchids, the video is designed for the beginning orchid grower and is being produced by Natures Bounty Productions. It is hosted by Doug Conklin, and the release date is early October. Yesterday a Japanese video crew was here to interview the boss for a video which will be shown in Japan sometime soon.
Those Glorious Goldenzelles ......
==================================
Once in awhile you really hit the jackpot. Our guys did when they remade Blc. Goldenzelle, one of the greatest art-shade cattleya crosses to come down the pike in recent times. When the progeny hit the market, they caused such a great stir the buzz hasn't died down yet. Now, their descendants are achieving blooming size, and Boss says they are really beautiful. Some of these new "teenagers" were offered in our Quik Pik mailer, out in early September. Boss is getting out another listing right soon. If you want one--or more--let us know. There is only a limited supply of some crosses.
A-Tisket, A-Tasket, We Finally Got our Baskets!
===============================================
After a looong wait. the slatted wood baskets we ordered have finally arrived. The baskets are just one more item added to our increasingly extensive and diversified list of orchid growers' supplies. Mrs. Boss keeps nagging at Mr. Boss to stay home and finish the Supplies List. ["It's not nagging," Mrs. Boss says, "It's a gentle wifely reminder."] Anyway, the list is growing every day and now includes sand-blasted grapewood for orchid-mounting plaques.
Quik Piks Arrives!
==================
Evolving out of the traditional Stewart Orchids Spring and Fall Shoppers, our new Quik Piks is streamlined and easy to use, giving our customers a fast, accurate glimpse of what's new and hot here at Stewart Orchids. It will come out on a sort-of quarterly basis, and it will also be posted here on the "Net" soon.
Environmental Kindness .... We're Doing Our Bit
The Boss and Mrs. Boss are constantly trying to find more environmentally friendly ways to do our business. One of the ways they have decided to use is to buy shipping boxes which are overruns from other companies' orders. This means that the box company doesn't have to junk perfectly good boxes. And we use something already created, from trees already cut down and processed. So when you get your next order from Stewart Orchids, it may be in a box with another company's logo printed on it. Inside it will be the same great plants we've always sent you. Let us know what you think about this new plan, and next month we'll let you know the results of the poll.
Golden Showers ........
=======================
We're proud to announce several more awards to Stewart Orchids' plants at the last few regional judgings:
C. leopoldii 'Girardelli' [species] HCC/AOS
Epc. Orange Glory [Epi pseudepidendrum x C. aurantiaca] 'Orange Crush' HCC/AOS
Blc. Warm Sands 'Tropic Touch' [Lc. Amber Glow x Blc. Chinese Bronze] HCC/AOS.
It Won't be Long Now
====================
The long anticipated 1998 Cattleya Hybrid Criterion List with over 280 offerings is expected to be ready sometime in mid-November. If you want to get one write, fax, or email us to make sure you are on the list.
