Blue Orchids-Natural Beauty or Artificial Breed?
Natural varieties of blue orchids are quite rare, and even in danger of extinction in some cases. This is probably because they grow under delicate environmental conditions, in certain habitats which are now being destroyed for the sake of human comfort. However, a blue orchid plant can still be a valuable asset if it is in the hands of the right person who knows how to take good care of it. Such a lucky plant can usually produce flowers three times each year, which can add color to the whole garden for nearly one month. But unfortunately in most of the cases blue orchids will became a white orchid at the second blooming cycle, because the blue color was artificially induced by growers.
Midnight Blue Orchids
Many varieties of orchids grow on trees with freely hanging aerial roots. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t grow them in pots. One of orchid fans all-time favorite Midnight Blue Orchid is very easy to grow in pots. Usually, blue orchid plants grow best in baskets, while they can be also grown on pieces of cork bark. Since aerial roots of orchids absorb moisture from air, it’s advisable to maintain a humid environment in the surroundings if possible. Also, it’s not wise to obstruct the growth of orchid roots as it may hinder the proper growth and flowering of the plant. Generally, re-potting is required once in a year or two, which should be done with special care so as not to hurt the roots.
